OUR EXTRACTION PHILOSOPHY
To those passionate about the healing power of cannabis, the overwhelming diversity of cannabis strains and the distinct characteristics of each one are truly amazing. At Breakwater, we believe that the uniqueness of each plant we cultivate can translate to the effective relief of a patient’s specific symptoms and support their individual wellness goals. In keeping with this philosophy, we honor the integrity of our Premium Flower with our in-house, strain-specific extractions, preserving the rich flavors and potent effects of each cultivar.
COLD DISTILLATION
Our first step is to isolate the strain’s essential oils, which contain the plant’s terpenes, flavors, and aromas, but do not contain any cannabinoids. We achieve this through cold distillation, a process that uses only purified water to strip the plant material of essential oils and recollect them into a flask. Since water and oil have different densities, they separate and we can remove the water layer. After filtering the resulting essential oils to remove undesirable plant particulates, we have pure, strain-specific essential oils and terpenes that we will reintroduce to our cannabinoid oil during final production.
CANNABINOID EXTRACTION
Next we extract the plant’s cannabinoid oil by drying and packing the plant material into fine mesh bags, and loading them into our extractor along with food-grade ethanol. The extractor agitates the plant material, allowing the cannabinoids to dissolve into the ethanol. Afterward, we filter the solution to remove chlorophyll, the green pigments that enable plants to make energy. Applying vacuum and heat to the solution, we remove 100% of the ethanol from the cannabinoid oil. Because ethanol has a lower boiling point than cannabis oil, we are able to vaporize the ethanol and redirect it to condense in another container, separating it from the cannabinoid oil.
Now, we decarboxylate the oil. Decarboxylation removes carboxylic acid groups from cannabinoids, converting them into forms that will produce psychotropic effects for users. In flower and hash consumption, decarboxylation occurs when a flame, torch, or other heat source is applied to the material. For our concentrated oil, we complete this step ahead of time because in the next step, we need to be able to generate very precise temperatures through vacuum. If we don’t decarboxylate the oil prior, the oil will produce gas and prohibit us from applying the required vacuum to achieve precise temperature control.
MOLECULAR
DISTILLATION
Our final step is molecular distillation. Using a similar method to ethanol separation, we remove any remaining undesirable compounds, such as fats, waxes, lipids, and chlorophyll. This additional step is more challenging however, because the undesirable elements have boiling points that are quite close to the boiling point of our cannabinoid oil. So, highly precise vacuum pressure and temperature control are critical to their successful removal. To achieve this, we properly removed CO2 and other volatile compounds in the previous steps.
All that remains at the end of our extraction process is our pure strain-specific distillate, which is now transparent with a beautiful deep honey-golden hue. To create the final product, we recombine the strain’s cannabinoid oil with its essential oils and terpenes, reforming the flavors, aromas, effects, and symptom relief of the originating plant. The result is cartridges and extract dispensers that contain zero additives and zero fillers – just pure, potent, and smooth-hitting cannabis oil.
